Our History
Trough Hill Baptist Church was organized and built in 1883. It is situated in the village of Crest Hill which at that time was primarily a black community. The land on which the church stands was owned by Mrs. Easter Nelson. Her home sat on the corner of routes 647 and 645 (now known as Crest Hill Rd and Tapps Ford Rd). Mrs Easter Nelson was dedicated to her community and her God. She saw the need for a place of worship in Crest Hill as there was no other church in the Crest Hill community, then and now. She donated the land for the church and the adjoining cemetery. She was a member and Mother of the church until her health prevented her active participation. The names of those involved in the construction of the church are not known, except for one, Charles Anderson (known as Buggy), who helped, this based on information family relatives. Trough Hill's cemetery soon became the "family cemetery" of the families in the community. Families such as Nelson, Anderson, Green, Lane, Williams, and Corbin.
